Rental terms
How Rentoff works and what the two sides agree to.
This describes how renting on the platform works. The agreement both sides sign for every booking is built on these rules.
What Rentoff is
Rentoff is a platform connecting car owners with renters. The rental agreement is between the owner and the renter; Rentoff holds the payment, verifies documents and reviews disputes.
Who can use it
Both renting and listing a car require identity verification (KYC): a driver's licence and a selfie. Listing also requires the vehicle registration. Every listing goes live only after review by the Rentoff team.
Booking
A booking is either sent as a request or confirmed immediately with instant book. Paying reserves the dates. On a normal booking the owner approves or declines; a decline refunds the payment in full.
Payment
Payment is processed through our payment partners. The money is held by Rentoff until the trip completes and is then transferred to the owner. The platform commission is 15% of the owner's share.
Deposit
When a listing sets a deposit it is held together with the payment and shown as its own line in the quote. The deposit goes back to the renter 48 hours after the trip ends, unless the owner has filed a damage claim against it. That claim has to be filed within 24 hours of the trip ending — deliberately sooner than the release, so that no claim is ever decided against money already on its way back. After that the deposit can no longer be claimed against, whether or not it has left yet. A claim filed in time keeps the whole deposit held until the Rentoff team decides it; that decision has no deadline of its own, and whatever is not awarded to the owner is returned to the renter.
If the car is damaged
The renter is liable for damage caused to the car during the rental — that is what the agreement both sides sign says. When a listing sets a deposit, Rentoff holds it: the owner may file a claim against it, the Rentoff team reviews the claim and decides how much of the deposit goes to the owner, and the rest is returned to the renter. The deposit is the most Rentoff can collect, but it is not a limit on liability. Rentoff holds no other money of the renter's, never charges the card again, and provides no insurance: if the damage costs more than the deposit, the owner and the renter settle the remainder between themselves — Rentoff neither pays that amount nor caps it. A claim is filed during the trip or within 24 hours of its end; the other side has 72 hours to answer; the Rentoff team decides within 48 hours. The handover and return records — odometer, fuel level and photos — are the main evidence, so check the record before you confirm it.
Cancellation and refunds
Flexible: Full refund if cancelled at least 24 hours before the rental starts. Moderate: Full refund if cancelled at least 72 hours before the rental starts. Strict: 50% refund if cancelled at least 7 days before the rental starts. No refund afterwards.
During the rental
The daily mileage limit, minimum rental period and house rules are set per listing and are visible before booking. Fines and traffic violations are the renter's responsibility.
Handover and return
Both sides sign the agreement before the car changes hands. Odometer, fuel level and photos are recorded at handover and return, and the renter countersigns the report. This is the primary evidence if a dispute arises.
Disputes
Either side can open a dispute during or after the rental. The Rentoff team reviews it and decides how the money is split.
Reviews
Once a trip is completed, each side may review the other. A review is published as soon as it is sent — we do not wait for the other side to write theirs, so they may read your review before writing their own. One review per trip, and once sent it cannot be edited or deleted. A review of a person appears on that person's profile and in their rating. As a renter you also rate the car: that rating appears on the car's listing page and in the car's rating.
