Driving in Uzbekistan: Rules, Fines, and Useful Tips

To confidently hit the road after renting a car through Rentoff, it's essential to know the local rules. This guide will be especially useful for guests from abroad.

Required Documents

When you're behind the wheel, you must have the following with you:

  • Driver's License — a national license for citizens of Uzbekistan; for foreigners, an International Driving Permit (IDP) or their national license is generally recognized;
  • Vehicle Registration Certificate — confirms the car's registration (provided by the host for rentals);
  • Insurance Policy — mandatory.

Take photos of your documents and save them on your phone – this will help even if the originals are lost.

Speed and Basic Rules

  • Strictly observe speed limits within the city – there are many cameras, and fines are issued automatically;
  • Seat belts are mandatory for the driver and all passengers;
  • Drunk driving is absolutely not tolerated – the penalty is very severe;
  • Using a phone by hand while driving is prohibited – use hands-free.

About Fines

Fines for traffic violations are tied to the BHM (Base Calculation Amount) and increase regularly. The most common ones are speeding, illegal parking, and not wearing a seat belt. The responsibility for fines incurred during the rental period lies with the renter, so adhering to the rules is beneficial for your wallet too.

Local Road Culture

  • Traffic slows down in central Tashkent during rush hours (8-10 AM, 6-8 PM) – plan your time with a buffer;
  • Many drivers consider turn signals "optional" – maintain distance and be careful;
  • Stop at the signal of traffic police officers on the roadside and calmly present your documents.

Before a Long Trip

  • Check tire pressure and the spare wheel;
  • Take water, food, and a power bank – infrastructure is sparse on desert roads;
  • Fill up the fuel tank, especially for methane/propane cars, consider the distance between gas stations.

A driver who respects the rules is Rentoff's most valued customer. Have a safe journey!
